It is terribly fascinating, but the note taking is killing me. I love reading Eliot, and frankly I needed to pick a difficult topic in order to make my quota for this 8-10 page paper, but the research makes my brain want to bleed out my ears.

I am certain this attitude is why I spend most of my time reading porn.

For a change of pace, it think I shall post stuff here instead of on my other LJ. I'm much more anonymous here.

I am in the midst of trying to tone down my fanfic reading so that I will hopefully stay more caught up in school. You guys don't know it on here, but I returned to college last year and got my GPA back up to passing. This semester is my first time back at school as a full-time student in 3 years and while it's going okay so far, I can tell from my syllabi that I'm only a few weeks away from tanking everything if I don't get my habits more under control. Specifically, I taking Seminar in Writing this semester, and I'm almost half-way through the semester and considerably LESS than half-way through the project I'm doing for the class. The project IS my grade, so this is a very big deal.

In addition to that:

I have to write a prequel to Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" for one of my lit classes. I want to do better than the other 3 people who took up this project idea, so I have to put on my ass-kicking boots.

I also have to edit and do some rewrites to a story I wrote last Spring so I can submit it to a competition my Seminar teacher has decided is going to be part of the participation grade. I've always intended to go back to this story and flesh out the middle and the ending, so this is a good opportunity. Also, I can't fathom producing something contest-worthy in this short of a time frame. My Seminar instructor did say that participants who make it to the national level tend to be guaranteed entrance to graduate school. I want to go to graduate school...

They are both due on Thursday, and I could possibly do a really good job on both if I could concentrate for five minutes at a stretch.

Today I violated one of my new fanfic rules but it resulted in only 2 hours of fanfic reading, which is less than usual (if that's all I do all day, we shall see).

I woke up this morning with the BEST idea for a Brittany-centric Daria short story. I'll have to write it down. I'm shelving all of my fanfic ideas until the semester is over but since I'm hosting a Daria Fanworks Day this Saturday it's the sort of project I could conceivably work on for an hour or two without too much guilt.

I am certain I would have a much better GPA and be much less happy with life if I didn't have such an overpowering addiction to adult-rated fanfic.

Here is my latest exorcism, some of the better fic I've read in the past year. This is really just the tip of the iceberg, I've read a helluva lot more than this and I'm sure I'll come upon all the rest of it in due time. This right here, this is just me cleaning up my bookmarks.

Daria

Bed and Breakfast Man by Ruthless Bunny
Fandom: Daria
Pairings: Daria/Trent
Rating: PG
Warnings/Categories: Post-Canon
Summary: It's Christmas-time and the gang is traveling to Las Vegas. Wedding Bells anyone?
Status: Complete, 31 Chapters
Comments: The writing, while decent, is not the style I usually go for. I think I've mentioned before that I'm into Daria fandom in a different way than the other fandoms I read. This one makes it to the list due to really interesting character development. I like the way that Ruthless Bunny handles the characters in a post-canon setting.

NCIS

Myths and Revelations by Crimson Quills
Fandom: NCIS
Pairings: Gibbs/DiNozzo
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Categories: AU with centaurs, no bestiality though
Summary: Ducky thinks it's time Gibbs brought someone in on his secret.
Status: Complete, 14 chapters
Comments:

Star Trek

I haven't watch much of Star Trek except the newest movie and the occasional episode. I don't know if it's due to the length of time the fandom has been around or what, but I have found a several pleasant surprise in the breadth and depth of fanfic out there for this series.

Status: Complete, One-Shot
Comments:

Shut Up and Eat Your Vegetables by BarrowJane
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot

Switch by ceres_libera ***
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Pairings: Kirk/McCoy
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Categories: AU
Summary: The life and times of Leonard H. McCoy MD/PhD … If Leonard McCoy's life could get any fucking weirder, it would be … Jesus, he didn't even want to think what that could possibly mean, because it's already been too fucking weird to make any kind of rational sense.
StatusComplete, 50 Chapters. You'll want to set aside a few days for this one. And read it properly, don't skip around. It's totally worth it!
Comments:

Take Refuge in What You Know by Corpus Invictus
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Pairings: Kirk/Spock
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Categories: AU, some OOC
Summary: Kirk has moved into an apartment and wants to get to know his neighbors. He meets his neighbor Spock, a loner who suffers from extreme agoraphobia. Kirk thinks he's a beautiful enigma.
Status: Complete, 35 Chapters
Comments:

Tangled Destinies by Kiera Marcos
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Pairings: Kirk/Spock
Rating: R at the moment, possibly NC-17 in the future
Warnings/Categories: AU
Summary: Spock convinces his father to move to Earth after refusing to bond with T’Pring. The consequences of this change the dynamics of his family and sets him on the path that will lead him directly to James Kirk.
Status: Incomplete but at a decent enough stopping place for now. The author promises more in the future and I'm inclined to believe her, but the updates are very, very slow coming. Currently has 7 (very long) chapters.
Comments: A major alteration to this story is that Jim is part Betazoid through his father, which gives him some telepathic and empathic abilities. It's a wonderful addition used to great effect in the story!

Tangled

What You Don't Know by Airplane***
Fandom: Tangled
Pairings: Eugene/Rapunzel
Rating: NC-17 eventually
Warnings/Categories:
Summary: It's become very clear to Eugene that Rapunzel has little to no understanding of amorous affection.
Status: Complete, 37 Chapters
Comments: A believable continuation of the movie told from Eugene's point of view. The humor is spot-on and the character development is utterly fantastic.

Ring Toss by Nemo Blank
Pairings: Daria/Tom, Trent/Brittany, Kevin/Andrea, Sandi/Ruttheimer
Rating: PG-13
Warnings/Categories: AU, drama
Summary: In Nemo Blank's final story, things are moving fast in the lives of our favorite Lawndale denizens, especially for Daria and Tom, whose relationship shifts into high gear after coming perilously close to ending for good. Little do they know that their road to happiness is about to develop some major curves...
Status: Complete, One-Shot (long)
Comments: This is a great take on an alternate way the series could have gone. The characters on the whole are a bit OOC, but it works. There's some really awesome character development here, and it's never so extreme that it's completely unbelievable. It's also a masterful handling of a large number of characters. Normally I favor one or two characters and the rest are just fodder, but I was really into everything that was going on in this story. Fantastic stuff.

Stripey's Daria Fanfic Recs

A note: Generally when I find fic in a new fandom I start posting recs to the multi-fandom recs list; and then once I have an unusually high number of recs for a specific fandom I move them to their own post. So far this has only been necessary with my HP fanfic recs (which is probably to be expected with how huge and varied that fandom is). That said, I'm into Daria and its fandom in a pretty hard way, so I think I'd rather just skip that process and start it on its own recs page.

Also, I love alternate-universe fics, and they are going to comprise the vast majority of these recs

The Cynic, That Fashionista, and the Jackass by Doggieboy
Pairings: n/a
Rating: PG-15
Warnings/Categories: AU, crossover, violence, harsh language
Summary: Three very different gunfighters from the Dariaverse come together in a search for stolen gold. A crossover western parody with three of the most unlikely partners in the title roles.
Status: Complete at 4 chapters
Comments: I've never seen "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", which is where the idea for this story supposedly came from, but it turns out that didn't matter. This fic is hilarious, and I especially enjoyed Beavis in this fic (which is weird, because even though Daria got its origins on that show I never especially enjoyed B&B).

Daria 2007: The Girl from Hope by The Angst Guy
Pairings: n/a
Rating: R
Warnings/Categories: AU, harsh language, angst, attempted suicide, mentions of adult situations
Summary: What might Daria have been like if the show had taken place in 2007, ten years later than it did? And what if Daria had gone to an alternate high school back in Highland? One answer to those questions lies in this response to two fanfic challenges.
Status: Complete, one-shot
Comments: Take note of the author's name. He's called that for a reason. That said, his writing is fantastic enough that he not only gets away with it, he makes you want to read more of his stuff.

Darius by The Angst Guy
Pairings: Darius (genderswitched Daria)/Jane
Rating: R
Warnings/Categories: AU, harsh language, sexual situations, angst, domestic abuse, mentions of suicide (not a main character)
Summary: Imagine Daria with a Y chromosome. What might have happened if the eldest child of Jake and Helen Morgendorffer had been born a boy? Here is an alternate-history might-have-been, or a parallel-universe might-yet-be, with all the fallout.
Status: Complete, one-shot
Comments: This is the only genderswitched Daria fanfic I've found that I like. The good news is I like it A LOT. The author made some of the characters OOC, especially Jake, but made up for it with wonderful interaction between some of the other characters. There are also some really great appearances by the Barksdale sisters.

God Save the Esteem by Charles RB
Pairings: romance isn't the focal point of the series, but there is some Daria/Tom
Rating: M
Warnings/Categories: AU, harsh language, sexual situations
Summary: The series has Daria arriving in Lawndale in 2010 - as a result of the timeline change, Helen and Jake were not hippies but instead were part of the hardcore punk scene. In this timeline, they never stopped being punks and "Killer" Quinn has been raised in their image - Daria, to their disappointment, dresses and acts mostly like she does on the show. They are, however, supportive of her sullen and questioning attitude, causing her to be more comfortable with herself and her family.
Status: In-progress, with 22 chapters as of this posting and regular updates
Comments: Another series that gets a rec for hilarity, "God Save the Esteem" might make you fall out of your chair. The only thing I don't like is that the fic isn't collected on a proper archive yet, so you have to surf through its forum posts on PPMB to read some of it (the link I've provided goes to the DariaWiki entry for this series, where you can find reliable links for each chapter). Keep in mind, I wouldn't rec it if it weren't well worth the trouble!

John Lane by RLobinske
Pairings: Daria/John (genderswitched Jane)
Rating: PG-15
Warnings/Categories: AU, genderswitch, off-screen adult situations
Summary: An alternative universe history. Outcast artist, John Lane, meets an interesting new girl in his self esteem class. Suggested by The Angst Guy's story, Darius.
Status: In-progress, with 48 chapters as of this posting and regular updates
Comments: I gather that genderswitched Jane is more common than genderswitched Daria in the fandom, and this is one of the oh-so-good ones. The story parallels the series and progresses during the highschool years. If you're fairly familiar with the series it's interesting as hell to see how the author changes things. Also, this is a feel-good fic.

Ring Toss by Nemo Blank
Pairings: Daria/Tom, Trent/Brittany, Kevin/Andrea, Sandi/Ruttheimer
Rating: PG-13

I've been tired of my username for a while and finally decided to change it. So now instead of Nofio I'll be going by FickleStripey, an alias I've used in chat and still like. All of my old links should work, and links to the old username will be redirected as long as LJ sees fit. If you have any links to my posts this would be a good time to change them.

Also, I'll be changing my e-mail account as well, but the old account will still forward messages for a while.

A Matter of Honor by Adridere
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Pairings: Aang/Toph, background Zuko/Katara and Sokka/Suki, and slight Aang/Katara
Rating: M
Warnings/Categories: het, graphic language, lemons, slight AU
Summary: Almost 4 years after the war. Aang is engaged to Katara and is up to Zuko to teach him the facts of life. Yep, the bees and the birds. Crazy kings, bananas and the ultimate contest for the hand of a reluctant maiden.
Status: Complete at 33 chapters. It has a sequel, "The Art of Getting Some", that is incomplete and likely abandoned. The first story is worth it in any case.
Comments: I adore Tophs' voice in this fic, and the author does a good job of balancing drama and humor.

The Taking Turns Series by Keelywolfe
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Pairings: Sokka/Zuko
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Categories: slash, AU, non-con, graphic lemons,
Summary: While staging their rescue at the Boiling Rock prison, things take a turn for the worse.
Status: Complete at 20 chapters. If you hunt through the tags you can also find the first chapter of a proposed sequel that, so far, hasn't been added to; but the one chapter alone ends well and is worth the read.
Comments: The link takes you to the last chapter in the series. I used this page because it contains links to all previous chapters above the actual story, so it should be pretty easy to read the whole thing without ruining the ending for yourself :)

Duty Before Honor by Silvershine
Fandom: Naruto
Pairings: Kakashi/Sakura
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Categories: slash, AU, non-con, lemons
Summary: Sakura knew why Tsunade didn't want a virgin on this mission. Things might get out of hand. Acts might be carried out too far. She was glad Kakashi was accompanying her, but right then she wouldn't have minded the entire population of Konoha.
Status: Completed, 19 chapters

House of Crows by SilverShine
Fandom: Naruto
Pairings: Kakashi/Sakura
Rating: M
Warnings/Categories: het, AU
Summary: War is coming to Konoha and Sakura is far from home, uncertain of her future. But one thing is for sure, Sakura will protect her unborn child at all costs, whether it be from Konoha's enemies... or from its own father.

How to File Form 39-B by The Hoyden

Summary: The first time Iruka met Hatake Kakashi, he was still on some pretty good painkillers.
Status: Completed, one-shot

The Human Series by Keelywolfe
Fandom: Transformers
Pairings: Bumblebee/Sam with many side pairings
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Categories: slash, AU, graphic lemons, attempted rape scene
Summary: Sam really hates walking home.
Status: WIP, with 40 chapters as of this posting. I only recommend this fic because it's really frickin' awesome and Keelywolfe's history with her fanfic leads me to believe she'll finish it. Plus, she updates pretty regularly.
Comments: I had never thought to look for fic for this series until I stumbled over this while looking for something else written by the same author. All I can say is holy hell in a handbasket, but this fic is good. Since reading this I've looked all over the fandom and haven't found anything else I like as much. I highly recommend you give this one a try. Keelywolfe just has a way of making the fic work, and work well.

Just a small update to let people know that I'm still kicking and yes, I do still share the fics offered up in my recs list that aren't elsewhere available on the web. I've become a lurker more than anything else the past few years, but I do still check my e-mail occasionally.

Before I leave, another note, for some reason I've been getting an increasing number of requests from people via LJ comment or private message. I have it stated quite clearly on my lists that if you want me to share a fic you need to send me a request via the e-mail address listed. Requests that aren't sent to me in the way specified are ignored, and have been for a good long time now.

2 Buffy the Vampire Slayer Fanfiction Recommendations
4 Harry Potter Fanfiction Recommendations

Breaking Free by StillRose
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairings: Spike/Xander
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Categories: SciFi AU, slash, graphic torture scene
Summary: Lt. “Xander” Harris and Captain William the Bloody have both suffered and lost in the on going war between the Biogens and Council.
Status: Completed, 45 chapters
Comments:

Repossession by Lazuli
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairings: Xander/Spike
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Categories: slash, angst, torture (mostly through flashbacks), rape (all through flashbacks), OC's (but I love them), amnesia!fic in the begninning, multiple personality disorder on the part of Spike/William, possible Highlander influences
Summary: The future. When Spike's hurt, who does he turn to?
Spoilers: Selectively into S6, then it's AU.
Status: Completed, 125 chapters
Comments: I found this on another recs list, where it was warned as being a Highlander crossover. I am unfamiliar with Highlander, but after reading this fic and then doing some Highlander research, I can say that at most the author is borrowing from Highlander mythology. As far as I can tell she hasn't used any characters from the Highlander universe. No mention of using Highlander influences is mentioned in the author notes, so it is equally likely that she just thought up the mythology herself. That said, I found this a highly enjoyable read. It was a long story that I adored from start to finish. The author deserves extra points for finding a believable way of making Xander and Spike be destined for each other, and also for utilizing an unusually creative way of extending Xanders lifespan.

Evernight by LilRinnieB
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairings: HPxSS
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Categories: Creature fic, mpreg, possessive Snape, OC's
Summary: It's Harry's seventh year at Hogwarts and the new strategy in the war against Voldemort is "Fight darkness with darkness." Harry goes through a series of changes that has him questioning everything he thought he ever knew about magic, darkness, destiny ... and a certain snarky Potions professor. .
Status: Work in Progress, 52 chapters as of this posting
Comments: You need access to the username/password in order to be able to read the fic at the author's website, but it is easy to acquire and very much worth it.

Pains and Contradictions by ATypicalSnowman
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairings: HPxSS

Summary: When Harry begins to break under the pressures of death and prophesy, help arrives from an unlikely quarter: Snape. Despite their own doubts, manipulations from all sides and hapless interventions combine to bring their two souls together.
Status: Work in Progress, updated roughly twice a month on average, 20 chapters as of this posting.

Two Households, Both Alike in Dignity by Mad Martha
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairings: HPxRW
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Categories: Series AU
Summary: That very first day on the Hogwarts Express, Harry shook Draco Malfoy's hand and became a Slytherin. Ron has hated him ever since. But Harry doesn't hate Ron ....
Status: Complete, 5 multichaptered stories (go to Mad Martha's author page to find the sequel stories, "Two Households II", "Two Households III" and so on.
Comments: This is one of my favorite AU's of any fandom. Mad Martha is an excellent author, and everything she produces is gold. Not all of her stuff turns out as serious as this story, but I didn't want to get repetitive by listing her too many times, so I decided to post my favorite of her work. Her author page here is pretty comprehensive, but if you find you like her work I recommend that you join her yahoo group, as it has some stuff that isn't available here, and also has stories grouped together so it's easier to find sequels and such within specific fic universes.

Tyger! Tyger! by Blood Cult of Freud
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairings: SSxHG, other minor pairings
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Categories: het, original characters, forced/arranged marriage, pregnancy, rape scene, angst
Summary: n/a
Status: Complete, 37 Chapters
Comments: I hadn't realized until after reading this fic that many people in fandom seem to have an issue with it. It contains several prominent fandom cliches, such as forced marriage and teenage pregnancy. I think that it all works in this fic, but others disagree. I believe the main issue is the author's writing style is not for everyone, and you should be able to tell after the first chapter or two whether it will work for you. Overall I consider this a story with a happy ending, but not a happily-ever-after story. The author takes a more realistic approach to how a person might deal with societal problems. Hermione gets to solve most of the stuff that bothers her, but she has to wait a very long time and compromise in doing it more subtly than some readers might prefer. I also really adore how the love grows over time in this fic, and that the characters are realistically flawed even in old age.
